Uncle Sam Desecrated At Team USA Soccer Match (UPDATED)

UncleSamEveryone knows the classic image of Uncle Sam. On Tuesday, July 9th, a new, 30-foot-tall version of Uncle Sam appeared at Portland’s Jeld Wen field. In honor of Team USA’s Gold Cup soccer match against Belize, Uncle Sam is shown wearing not a stars hat, but a Cascadia hat. Cascadia is a fantasy “nation” movement that is promoted throughout the northwest. Cascadians seek to arrange for Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia to secede and form a new nation that is based on environmentalism and socialism.

This is hardly the first time elements of the Cascadia movement have appeared at commieball, er, soccer games in Portland. The Cascadia flag and its tree symbol appear regularly at Portland Timbers games, the city’s MLS team.

Update! Video has now surfaced of the unveiling of “Cascadian Sam”, which immediately followed the singing of the National Anthem. (I suppose we can at least give them credit for singing the Star Spangled Banner, rather than the Internationale) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ5vvvL7Ur8

The Cascadia movement made headway during Occupy Portland, as their members were often seen flying the flag at rallies.

And oh yeah, the USA kicked the crap out of Belize, 6-1.

Haha. Cascadia Sam here isn’t as much a symbol of a Secessionist movement as he is a symbol of the pride that Cascadians have in their country. Plus, it makes sense with the tifo which exclaims that “Everyone has something to stand for” whether it is Community, Club, or Country.

All that being said, it’s fairly obvious that the author here isn’t interested in actual reporting as much as hilarious misguided sensationalism.

You people from the PNW sure have thin skin…Probably the biggest problem with your region in general that I can see, always thinking everyone is picking on you and trying to walk around with your elitest mentality with a chip on your shoulder. Grow up, ignore the haters in general, and live your life.

What a idiot! ==the person who wrote the article. –obviously takes life far too seriously….probably has no life of his/her own and is usually busy with far-right politics. Long Live Cascadia! Long live the Portland Timbers and the Timbers Army!

Since when did Uncle Sam become a sacred image?

I wasn’t in favor of secession, but guessing that you won’t be coming with us, I say let’s do it chaps! First though, let’s take care of those puppets of the Imperialist Pig Dogs, LA Galaxy this weekend.

So, the American flag doesn’t have a troubled history and meaning? Which flag is associated with imperialism, colonialism, torture, militarism, and exploitation?

Cascadia means different things to different people, even within the Timbers Army. What we all agree on is pride in our bioregion, which doesn’t necessarily mean endorsing an unrealistic bid for independence.

It should be noted that the image of Uncle Sam wearing his local colors is in front of enormous Stars and Stripes of the USA. Also, we fly our city’s flag at games too, but that doesn’t mean Portland wants to secede either, even though Bush I referred to us as Little Beirut.

Lastly, soccer, internationally, is much more of a free market sport than any popular American pastime. Calling it commie ball is ignorant.

Not all fans ignore the politics. Some want secession even if it might be a long way off. but never have I seen the movement disrespect the USA. The best way to describe it is a sign I saw promoting independance…

“Hey USA, sorry we need to seperate, it is not you… its us!”

Cascadians like the USA, we just want to be alone.

rise ye workers [starvelings] from your slumbers
    Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
    Away with all your superstitions
    Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth [forthwith] the old tradition [conditions]
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

    So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
    So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

    No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we’ll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They’ll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We’ll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E’er the thieves will out with their booty [give up their booty]
And give to all a happier lot.
Each [those] at the forge must do their duty
And we’ll strike while the iron is hot.

Um, aren’t there like some GIANT FUCKING STARS AND BARS behind the “desecrated” Uncle Sam?

Because a secessionist movement would definitely fly the colors of their oppressive homeland.

    God you’re an idiot.

Since when did Uncle Sam become a sacred image? You don’t like the regional pride image, yet apparently the following isn’t “desecration” of the sacred Uncle Sam.

holy carp. Cascadia is a real region, and for Pacific NW soccer fans, it’s not about politics – it’s about beating the other 2 teams in the region. Portland, Seattle & Vancouver compete annually for the Cascadia Cup, based (now) on the results of their MLS matches. this is a competition that is owned by the fans, not the team owners, and it represents pride in their teams. Portland is the current holder of the Cup. no one in the Timbers Army (the Portland Timbers fan group) is advocating secession. and certainly not at a soccer game hosted by a team that is owned by former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson’s son!

and btw, the Timbers Army sings the Anthem at the first game of the year every year. get some facts next time. this article is being distributed with vast heapings of mockery.

You’re an Idiot… haha Commie ball? WTF is that crap? and do you live in the Northwest? Didnt think so, argo you have no idea what you’re talking about this symbol shows up as sounders games and whitecaps games too. No one here is trying to secede from anyone, what a stupid notion. The flag simply represents the region we live in, you call it the northwest, we call it Cascadia simple as that. There are a few small groups that are extreme activists who want to secede but that can be said about southerners wanting to as well to this day. What a stupid article.

Look – I had some time off after promoting the July 4th super sale at Mattress World, and took this gig. Sorry if I missed out on your article about me whoring myself out to shill everything from used cars to mattresses to burgers.

Also, don’t confuse folks having pride in their region’s natural beauty with secessionism. I assure you, as someone who owns a Cascadia flag, 99% of us who love living in Cascadia love the US more.
